What is an electronic proof of identity or eID card?

Citizens of a member state of the European Union or a signatory state to the Agreement on the European Economic Area who are not German are issued a card with an electronic proof of identity function (eID card) on application. The Embassy in Bern is responsible for applicants residing in Switzerland or Liechtenstein.

How can I apply for an eID card?

You can only apply for an eID card in person at an appointment and only at the embassy in Bern. It is not possible to apply at a German honorary consul.

You will need these documents to apply:

• completed application form
• a valid identity document issued by your home country, e.g. passport or national identity card (identity card), original and one copy
• Proof of address, e.g. certificate of residence from your municipality or tenancy agreement for your private home, original and one copy
